The Green Mind features an original soundtrack by composer Abi Fry. “In the dim light of The Green Mind (2013), iguanas, snakes and a lonely tamarin come out of the darkness. They get confused in ferns, intertwine with flowers and disappear among palm branches, which cover them with multiple exposures of static watery frames.” The Green Mind was reviewed by cineaste Maria Gribova for Cineticle Art-cinema magazine, featuring as their Film of the Week. In the article writer Maria Gribova considered the film as a journey “towards the onieric visions of the lost unconscious” - “в сторону онейрических видений утраченного бессознательного”. Making Monsters The following text is an extended reflection on the making of the film and features previously classified information about a monstrous incursion of antediluvian animals in London. Time Regained The echoes of her warning shot reverberated off the crystalline surface of the enormous time-shield. Oblivious to the warning, Tatum stood transfixed before the giant reptile, mesmerised by its jewelled eyes. Around it’s armoured head the petals of a giant crimson rose swayed, emitting a heady, intoxicating scent. Unable to approach she watched from the elevated observation platform as the Jurassic beast reared like a fortress above him. In the months following the detonation of the time-bomb the parkland at Sydenham had been cordoned off whist the scientists made their initial surveys. From behind the protective cordon, security chief Jane Gladwell-Ballard, along with the government approved emergency researchers, had watched the affected zone revert back through time. Within the zone, various blocks of bygone time now seemed to be able to exist simultaneously, with several different time segments concurrently overlaid upon each other. During late afternoon the time-flow seemed to slow, leaving frozen sheets of collaged time hanging in the air. Disorientating shifts of scale were commonplace: a mammoth grove of gargantuan flowers had erupted suddenly, out of which the figures of two Victorian dandies had appeared, their clothes sparkling with the iridescent time-jewels that often decorated the most recent arrivals. Two days later these time-visitors had disappeared, their fading images overlaid with that of the emerging Jurassic mega-flora, signs that the zone was drastically rewinding itself through time. From a past distant and obscure, ancient creatures had began to reappear. Tatum, an obviously unstable junior film technician, had gained illegal access to the zone having bypassed the security systems of the surrounding dome with a stolen entry key. Clearly he intended to approach the emerging dinosaurs. Through the surveillance cameras he had been seen attempting to film a dormant Megalosaurus, frantically setting up his cine-camera and tripod. The monster, stilled by a temporary lull in the time-flow, had become enveloped by a giant rose, its petals sluggishly swaying like giant perfumed sails. With surprising speed the vast reptilian beast had come to life. Tatum defensively raised the cine-camera as the immense jaws parted above him. Hungry after its journey across time the monster quickly devoured him. It hadn’t eaten for 120,000,000 years! Toby Tatum, 2014</image:caption>

Mental Space invites immersion onto a dreamed-up Otherworld where visions of coral-like foliage, fiery chasms, emerald jungles and magic flowers proliferate. Mental Space features an original soundtrack by composer Abi Fry. Mental Space was awarded BEST FILM at the Swedenborg Film Festival in March 2016. “Swaying mesmerically in the overheated water the immense golden petals of the giant aquatic rose held the drowned landscape spellbound. I’d journeyed far to see this, this monstrous deity blooming at the secret heart of an impossible undersea world. As I gazed into the lush recessive folds of the flower’s central core it emitted a deep-bass drone, the sound pulsing outward through the warm amniotic water, reverberating out across the sunken regions of the now collapsing dream.” The above text is an excerpt from The Deep Well, an article by Toby Tatum that reflects on the making of his 2014 film Mental Space. The article was published in issue two of MIA Journal, appearing among a collection of writings by artists united by a shared enthusiasm for nature & landscape. The full piece is online here. <image:caption>Enter a landscape of curious subtle enchantment, where sentient shadows brood and magic shines resplendent in streams of illuminated water. The Toby Tatum Guide to Grottoes & Groves features an original soundtrack by composer Abi Fry. The film was awarded BEST FILM at the November 2016 edition of the Swedenborg Film Festival. The prize was judged and awarded by the visionary film-maker Andrew Kötting, who said: "I really enjoyed this work - animistic and phantomic - hidden presences and trace elements - voices coaxed out the frame by very subtle light and shadow play - as part of a large projection/expanded cinematic experience the work has enormous potential" "He guides us into places we seldom visit." in 2018 Dale Hudson and Claudia Pederson, curators of Invisible Geographies, wrote an insightful essay on the film: The result of “a year-long vision quest into the twisted labyrinths of the forest,” The Toby Tatum Guide to Grottoes and Groves presents psychological and emotional geographies in particular and peculiar environments near the coastal town of Hastings (United Kingdom). The video opens with music accompanied by a black screen. Gradually, the image fades to reveal details of a shadowy woodlands. Movements are subtle and often only suggested by the play of light on the leaves of trees or the surface of water. An echoing murmur accompanies a long shot of branches and leaves blowing in the wind and shimmering under the sun. The music intensifies, vibrating loudly at the moment of a cut between two visual images. At times, Abi Fry’s sound design evokes the songs of cetaceans, perhaps whales, swimming in the nearby English Channel. At other times, it evokes Teiji Ito’s score for Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid’s Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), a feminist critique of normative institutions from marriage to Hollywood that is remarkable for its dreamlike evocations and multilayered relationships between sound and image. Tatum, however, guides us on a very different journey, one that is appears to be devoid of the presence of terrestrial and aquatic mammals. He guides us into places that we seldom visit. The dark images present a challenge to audiences accustomed to streaming media on their laptops and mobile and watching them in full light. In order to see the images clearly, the video prompts the audience to view the video in a darkened room, which figuratively embodies the video’s subject of grottos and groves, where stone and foliage offer a visually obscuring protection from the sun. The play of light appears to contradict a sense of spatial depth, suggesting geographies that are rarely written on film or video. Tatum describes his videos as “windows or portals to another world,” inviting audiences “to peer across the threshold” into an aspect of nature that most have not experienced. Because of accelerated global warming, the video may soon be a document to an irretrievable verdant past. <image:caption>A place of webs and shadows, where time slows and a strange music signals enchantment. The Loom features an eerie soundtrack by composer Abi Fry, produced by recording the otherworldly sounds issuing from an Aeolian harp. The Aeolian harp, an instrument played solely by the wind, was a prime symbol of the Romantic era. It was thought to have been originally invented by Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) who was also lowered into the crater of Vesuvius, tried to construct a world language, and studied Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Aeolian harp that features in The Loom was made especially for the film by instrument maker James Parry. Toby Tatum’s film “The Loom is a disturbing work that will patiently involve the spectator in its web” Curtas Vila Do Conde, 2019 festival catalogue. Writer Ben Nicholson (a.k.a Alt/Kino) featured The Loom in his in-depth survey of Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival 2019 for UK film journal Sight & Sound magazine. <image:caption>The little creatures of the riverbank emerge to bask in the glow of an enchanting moon. Toby Tatum's Night on the Riverbank was created through reworking footage from a forgotten B&W children’s programme. Night on the Riverbank features a magical new score by composer Abi Fry. According to Italian film blog L'emergere del possibile the film was conjured via invocation, issuing forth from beyond the grave: Night on the Riverbank “è un film che sembra provenire direttamente dall'oltretomba”. L'emergere del possibile later included the film in their 2019 best film list. “Enter the terrain of the most magical and translucent night”. Spanish blogger Cinesinfin posted a marvellous review of Night on the Riverbank, the writer considering the film in the context of children’s fables. The review also praises “the fantastic musical composition of Abigail Fry that manages to transcend attractive contemplation and reach the territory of fantasy and dream.” The full review, in Spanish, is online to read here. Abi Fry described her working practice during the Q&A at Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival 2020: “I have quite a specific process when composing for the films of Toby Tatum. My aim is to clear my mind and become a blank canvas whilst I watch the film many times in silence and allow ideas to surface. I try not to impose my own will until I have connected on a subconscious level and allowed the film’s magic to guide me. The first thing that came to me, when considering Night on the Riverbank, was the idea of stretching time and space and I began to experiment with cascading piano motifs to get this across, adding shimmering strings and floating harps to create the feeling of magic in the air.” Night on the Riverbank is distributed by Collectif Jeune Cinéma.
